Community Mosaic for the Courthouse Lawn
OVERVIEW
In 2022, The City of Morganton commissioned TOSS to create a public art project on the Courthouse Lawn to respond and reflect on our culture in Burke through visual art. It was installed the summer of 2023.
👩🏻🎤 THE ARTIST
Hannah Thrower is a visual artist and art teacher living and working in Morganton, NC. Her visual practice primary focuses on printmaking and ceramics. With seven years of teaching experience, Hannah was an integral part in the formation of TOSS and continues her work as an arts advocate and teacher while growing her family. In her free time she enjoys being outside, spending quality time with family and friends and creating culinary delights for her fortunate friends.
✏️ PUBLIC INPUT
TOSS organized two opportunities for public input on the concept - showcasing culture in Burke- a bilingual virtual survey, and a pop up at the Grand Opening of the Renovated Courthouse Lawn. The design was presented publicly and feedback was gathered on the design through a virtual survey. After two revisions with community feedback, and a blessing from the Public Art Commission, Hannah created the tiles with student participation.
